The Dormition Fast is a two-week fasting period in the Orthodox Church dedicated to preparing spiritually for the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. During this time, the faithful are encouraged to practice prayer, repentance, and fasting in honor of the Theotokos and her life of humility and devotion.

The fast begins on August 1 and ends on August 14 on the Revised Julian (Gregorian) calendar. On the Old Julian calendar, it is observed from August 14 to August 27, concluding with the celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15 (Gregorian) / August 28 (Old Julian)

Throughout the fast, the traditional fasting rule is strict: meat, dairy, eggs, fish, wine, and oil are generally avoided, with fish permitted on the Feast of the Transfiguration.
